3D Coating

For Nearly every Packaging Solution

3D Barrier coating / Plasma coating

3D barrier coating is a plasma coating process that involves depositing an extremely thin, highly flexible layer of SiOx on three-dimensional objects. This process thus gives barrier properties to monomaterial packaging surfaces. 3D barrier coating is the ideal solution for companies that have to meet stringent packaging requirements in the food, pharma and cosmetic industries. It is also the perfect fit for medical technology applications.

  • Effective barrier against oxygen, water vapor and aromas
  • High resistance to flex-cracking
  • Minimum interaction between the packaging and the product, and vice-versa
  • Reduced content leak
  • Microwave safe
  • Metal detector compatible
  • Suitable for laser coding

Benefits of barrier layer

  • Micro-layer (no nano-particles)
  • Barrier against chemical migration
  • Minimum chemical migration between packaging and content
  • Suitable for use with PCR
  • Barrier layer offering predictable, high-quality performance
  • Packaging remains monomaterial
  • Recycling-friendly design

3D Barriere Coating

Resource efficiency is one of the key challenges of our time. With raw materials becoming increasingly scare and expensive, every gram of material saved helps protect the environment.

3D coating is the perfect solution for injection molded and thermoformed packaging in the food, pharma, cosmetics and chemicals industries. An extremely thin (~ 100 nm), highly flexible SiOx layer is deposited on injection molded packaging and parts of various shapes and sizes. This provides packaging elements made of standard monomaterials (e.g. PP) with an excellent barrier function.

Wide range of base materials possible

  • Standard injection molding pellets
  • PP or HDPE
  • PET, PA, PS, PVC
  • Bio pellets

Product examples

  • Hot and cold drinks (e.g. coffee, tea, concentrate)
  • Baby and infant food
  • Fruit juice concentrate
  • Energy drinks
  • Dessert products
  • Canned fruits and vegetables
  • Meat and sausage products
  • Cheese – of all varieties
  • Creamy products with long shelf lives
  • High-barrier tube shoulders/spouts for stand-up pouches

You need 100 grams of EVOH or just 1 gram of sand to create a 10m2 high-performance barrier against oxygen!

  • Adaptation to individual shapes, for example, cups, capsules and tube shoulders
  • Greatest possible transparency
  • Monomaterial with high-performance barrier
  • Extremely resource efficient
  • Light weight products thanks to new design
  • Outstanding product protection
  • Optimized shelf life
  • No change in taste during shelf life
  • Minimum interaction between packaging and product, and vice-versa
  • Taste protection level I (functional barrier, similar to glass)
  • Taste protection level II (no migration of plastic flavor carriers to the product)
  • Food safety approval
  • Low unit costs for coating
  • Reduced costs with lower bill of materials

Similar to the performance of glass, PECVD barrier coating based on SiOx is the only way to achieve demanding barrier goals and reap these benefits.

Lower raw material consumption – packaging elements are designed for the application and not the coating process.

Ease of recycling – thanks to monolithic materials.

Compostable substrates – so coated containers can also be fully composted.
